Notes: St Andrews Major C.I.W. Primary School in Dinas Powys, South Wales, has taken a pioneering step by using BioAsphalt for their basketball courts! SteelPhalt’s SteelDense ECO+, featuring 20% Kraft Lignin BioBinder from Gautam ZEN UK LTD, has been used in the basketball court of St Andrews Major School in Dinas Powys. This significantly reduces the carbon footprint, setting a great example for others to follow. This innovative BioBinder, commonly used on eco-friendly roads, now offers a healthier environment for our students and athletes. Let’s champion greener solutions for all aspects of our community!

Steelphalt specializes in the production of asphalt products using 95% recycled Steel Slag making it a low-carbon asphalt grade suitable for various applications including highways, local authorities, housing, car parks, sports, etc & Gautam ZEN UK LTD, a company specializing in sustainable and renewable supply solutions, supplied BioBinder Lignin for this project.

As per the requirements, Steelphalt supplied AC Dense-grade asphalt with Kraft Lignin, which replaced a certain percentage of bitumen. Normally bitumen, an oil-based binder with a significant carbon footprint, is used to bind the asphalt. The use of BioBinder Kraft Lignin, a renewable bio-based substance, as an alternative, dramatically reduces the product’s carbon footprint and it requires Warm Mix Asphalt temperatures of 135°C-145°C. The fixed CO2eq locked in the asphalt offsets the positive emissions.
